What Is Shea Butter? Origins, Composition & Why It Works

Shea butter is a plant fat pressed from the nuts of the shea tree (Vitellaria paradoxa), known in French-speaking West Africa as karité. The tree grows wild across a 3,000-mile band of African savanna — the “shea belt” — stretching from Senegal in the west to South Sudan and Uganda in the east. It is not farmed in plantations: nearly all shea nuts are gathered by hand from wild trees, overwhelmingly by women, which is why so many brands in our directory trace their supply to women’s cooperatives in Ghana, Togo, Burkina Faso, and Uganda.

How the butter is made

Traditional processing has changed little in centuries. The fruit is collected and the nut inside is boiled, dried, and cracked to free the kernel. Kernels are crushed, roasted, and ground into a paste, which is then kneaded with water so the fat separates. That fat is scooped off, heated to remove remaining water, and left to cool into the ivory-colored solid sold as raw or unrefined shea butter. What's actually in it

Shea butter is mostly triglycerides built from two fatty acids: stearic acid, which gives it its firm, buttery body, and oleic acid, which makes it melt on skin contact. The exact ratio varies by region — East African “nilotica” shea is naturally higher in oleic acid, which is why it is softer and creamier than West African shea (see nilotica vs. West African).

What makes shea unusual among plant butters is its high unsaponifiable fraction — the portion of the fat that isn't triglycerides at all. This fraction carries most of the ingredients people buy shea for: triterpene esters (including cinnamic acid esters), tocopherols (vitamin E), phytosterols, and allantoin. Research attributes shea's soothing, anti-inflammatory reputation largely to these compounds. They are also the part most diminished by aggressive refining, which is the core argument for unrefined butter.

Why it works on skin and hair

Shea butter melts at roughly body temperature, spreads as an occlusive layer that slows water loss, and softens skin as an emollient. It is widely used on dry skin, rough patches, lips, cuticles, and as a sealing step on textured hair. It is generally considered low on the comedogenic scale, though very oily skin types often prefer it on the body rather than the face. People with tree-nut allergies should ask their doctor before use — shea is a nut fat, although allergic reactions to topical shea are considered rare because the proteins largely don't survive processing.

A note on claims: shea butter has real evidence as a moisturizer and emollient, and its compounds are being studied for more. But it is a cosmetic, not a medicine — anyone using it for a skin condition like eczema should treat it as a supportive moisturizer, not a treatment, and talk to a dermatologist about anything persistent.
